I am super interested in the work from Pedagogy of Photography (POP). POP is a project created by Katie DelaVaughn, and has been done around the globe and with people of all different ages. I was drawn to the photo in the syllabus because of the way it looks, and although the project looks different for every person, it is still such an interesting aesthetic every time. I’m trying to load this post with pictures so everyone can know how cool it is.

I love that this uses multiple media, combining poetry, photography, and (in some cases) drawing. This is very intentional because it builds literacy in a real, creative, beautiful way. I also found that these projects are tied to the communities of the people making them. For instance, the second graders in this group are presenting at the public library in town. Another group of second graders created projects relating to their favorite place in their community, and their pieces were hung in those places. A middle school group has exhibited their work at museums, colleges, and more, and been featured in local news. (!!! so cool and meaningful and real !!!) DelaVaughn’s blog also featured posts about POP field trips, fun, and community building. I’m obsessed.
You selected beautiful images Jess and yes, the link to literacy (and bilingual literacy in the case of the syllabus pic) is key. That bottom image brings back memories as it was from a program/ exhibition that I coordinated in NY.
ReplyDeletePOP is something I love! Love seeing the blend of YDEV and the arts
